I started swimming in 1960 with the Keighley swimming club. There were a couple of people who were long distance swimmers – one was Kendall Mellor who went on to swim the Channel in 1963. I was on his Pilot boat which gave me an insight as well as to what was involved.
However my first long distance swim was the Morecambe Bay inshore in July 1962.
From there I swam Fairhead to Ballycastle, Derwentwater, ASA 5 mile, Coniston, Ullswater, Torbay, Morecambe Bay Windermere, Fleetwood to Morecambe and finally France to England in 1966.
Since then I’ve been involved with all aspects of long distance swimming from rowing to Channel Observer, and finally a member of the executive.
I don’t know how 54 years has gone so quickly.
